Most of our traveling and exploring on the ground is in this old rig, a 1999 Ford F-350 that carries a 4-Wheel Pop-Up “Granby”. Having had previous experience with the same brand on an old Toyota pickup, I knew how I wanted to configure it. I bought both new in late 1998 and have kept and maintained them for eighteen years. In my humble opinion the 4-Wheel brand is the most robust out there. It is built on a tig-welded aluminum frame and stands up to long-time off-road twisting and turning. It has been mostly trouble free, although I recently did some renovations after eighteen years of use.
The Ford is a stretch-cab, long-box, 7.3 liter diesel with the 6-speed manual gearbox. Having had Japanese vehicles for many years, I was not prepared for the continuous repairs that this vehicle has required. it is basically a robust and sound off-road truck, but in the approximately 150,000 miles that we’ve driven it, numerous things have broken.
